I was watching TV tonight (commercial station – Channel 10 if you’re interested). They cut to a news break. The top stories were:

  • Interest rates rise (0.5% increase in the Australian cash rate)
  • The latest NSW parliamentary scandal (minister arrested for alleged teen sex)
  • Britney Spears files for divorce
  • Some story involving half naked women that I can’t even remember

I know it’s good to know that we don’t slavishly follow the US. But surely the fact that a substantial part of the US government has just changed hands warrants a brief mention in a set of news headlines?

Side issue: I went to the Channel 10 website to check my memory – they don’t even tell you what the headlines are there! Talk about living in the dark ages.

  1. Channel 10 aside, I’m really hoping that all this stuff will gradually wear down Howard’s support base.

  2. Penguin,
Try living in WA – the West Australian is a joke and the Sunday Times is worse. The Channel 10 news comes from news readers living in Sydney pretending to be in WA and 7 and 9 are not much better. The ABC is better, but to get really good qulity news you either need to get the AFR or go to Foxtel for BBC World.

  3. My husband refers to the news on every channel apart from SBS as “gossips”. We keep saying: “We’ll only watch SBS,” but it’s so easy to get drawn into the “gossips news”.

Honestly, how many times has Britney Spears got divorced? She seems to be doing so every single week. I wish she’d hurry up and get on with it.

  4. Well, you’d like to think it would trump Britney and K.Fed anyway! LOL
