I have to record this: Australia’s women just won the World Basketball Championships! Women’s basketball is one of the few sports I make an effort to see live, whenever world class teams are playing in Sydney, and with the Australian women’s team having been ranked number 2 for the last 10 years, you can see some pretty good basketball when they’re in town.
Australia didn’t beat the US (their nemesis) in the final, unfortunately; Russia beat them in the semis. I imagine the win would have been even sweeter if they’d beaten the US.
But nevertheless. I imagine that that must be the most meaningful team world championship (if you judge by the number of countries who play the sport) that Australia holds right now, men or women. A wonderful win, richly deserved for the team.
Let’s hope that they can keep it for the Olympics.
